Review: Ghostopolis

Ghostopolis
Written & illustrated by Doug TenNapel

Synopsis: "Imagine Garth Hale's surprise when he's accidentally zapped to the spirit world by Frank Gallows, a washed-out ghost wrangler. Suddenly Garth finds he has powers the ghosts don't have, and he's stuck in a world run by the evil ruler of Ghostopolis, who would use Garth's newfound abilities to rule the ghostly kingdom. When Garth meets Cecil, his grandfather's ghost, the two search for a way to get Garth back home, and nearly lose hope until Frank Gallows shows up to fix his mistake."

My talent for discovering high-caliber, all-ages graphic novels seems to know no bounds.

I only stumbled upon Mr. TenNapel recently, I believe through Twitter, specifically via fellow tweeps who couldn't stop gushing about how much they loved this book.

Naturally, I had to investigate. And I wasn't disappointed. Something about Mr. TenNapel's type of loose, rough brushwork always appeals to me, like Craig Thompson and Chris Schweizer. And I'm always a sucker for a light-hearted yet dark adventure into the netherworld (I was the kid who loved watching Beetlejuice and the Addams Family movies over and over, though I was never a member of the usual black-clad, eye-liner wearing "goth squad"). And on top of all that, this is a story that, much like a Pixar film, can truly be enjoyed by both young and old alike.

Go add it to your library right now and thank me later.
